My research focuses on contemporary literature, and in particular on poetry. Much of my work has been on elegy, a genre or mode in which the creative activity of poetry is expected to have practical value, in changing thoughts and feelings. Elegy is concerned with what really matters in human existence, and with what can be conserved: one of those vital things is language, and in analysing the values, responsibilities and capabilities of language, I try to make my work as accessible as possible.

Studying literature involves input and output, both looking closely at texts and looking out to the worlds with which those texts are in dialogue; by investigating where words and ideas come from, how they function, and where they can go, literature students become better readers, writers and thinkers. My classes provide opportunities to ask questions, express opinions, and develop skills for professional life, including attention to detail, structured communication, and critical thinking skills about the value of information.
